Concern for undersea power cable

There are new fears over the condition of the undersea cable link that provides around half of Guernsey's power.

Guernsey Electricity say observation work into its state will start as soon-as-possible.

The cable has been repaired before, but now it is the internal fibres that are causing concern.

The area of cable which will be inspected is half a kilometre from Les Terres Point, to the south of Havelet Bay.

A £70m project for a new undersea cable connection has been a decade in the planning.

Last month, engineers began the process of ‘energising’ the cable.

It will link Periérs in France with Jersey, and has a 100MW capacity, doubling the amount of electricity the Channel Islands can import.
